Working Christmas

Good afternoon, everyone. I'm currently flying home from India, and I accidentally picked up a book for 'young adults', and I'm finding it a little boring. Then I thought I'd watch something on the entertainment system and choose 'And just like that', which is also a little boring (I'm hard to please, I know), so I thought I'd do another blog. This blog is for all my people working Christmas… you are not alone!!!

So I've worked many Christmases over the years, on Bondi beach in a restaurant, and last year, I did a night flight back from Vegas where everyone was outrageously hungover (probably myself included). I've also been on a boat in Dubai for Christmas, and occasionally, I spend it with my family at home.

Christmas in the Segers household has never really been a big deal; mum always bangs on about how it should only be for religious people that believe in it being Christ's birthday, but, to be honest, all my friends that do Christmas properly have no beliefs… let's be honest as British we love to love Christmas (80% of what is available on the IFE is Christmas shite). Anyway, I've always tried to get my family to get into the more English way; I bring the games out (my dad and I start to get very competitive - he's made me cry before, lol). I try to get Christmas lunch to make an appearance. Still, I'll usually add the Brussels sprouts to whatever we have to keep me happy (salmon and potatoes typically… honestly, mum, no wonder people think we are weird). We do a little present for each other. Last year my mum and I got each other the same perfume, but mine was a big bottle. I said shall we just keep our own presents?!? 😂 I love being with my family for Christmas, but they just don't feel it the same way. I've been known to go to my friend's houses for Christmas just to get my game's Christmas fix and a Yorkshire pudding.

This year, my brother is continuing his Latino ladies obsession and going to spend Christmas in Mexico with a girl. I'm sure we will meet soon, and Mum and Dad, as they no longer have Kelsey, the dog to look after, had booked to be away for Christmas (this was all arranged before I even got my roster)!!! We love each other lots, but Christmas isn't their thing!!! (I think 3 years in a row, we went to a Chinese restaurant!) Anyway, I'm being dramatic, sorry, but this year, I figured I'm probably going to work Christmas, so I at least can bid smartly….

I really wanted to spend this Christmas with Simon as we were apart last year. However, Simon is a bit of a plane princess and won't travel in any cabin other than First or Business (he will say it's because he's really tall, but he's just a princess). BA flights (well, my flights) are always full, so the best thing to do was bid for short-haul. That way, if he does have to be on a jumpseat, he can grin and bear it for an hour! Luckily, Dublin is closed for Christmas Day, so the last flight out on Christmas Eve gets to stay until Boxing Day morning …. I'm actually doing 3 sectors on Boxing Day and going back to Dublin, so Simon even has a lay-in and is joining for my 3rd flight of the day, haha! So this is what I asked for, and I've got it. I'll be taking Simon (he didn't have a choice), and I've bought us Christmas jumpers and booked us dinner at the hotel. I'm excited to have our first Christmas together despite 'working'. I'm also taking him to Cyprus for my New Year trip. :)

This time of year is definitely one of my favourites. Still, I can't help but feel so sorry for Hayley's family, especially her mum, who will have their first Christmas without her. Treasure your loved ones; whatever Christmas means for you, I hope you have fun. I've bought all the gear (and for my crew), and wearing it on my flights, I'm going to get Simon out of his Christmas Grinch spirit and have fun!!!

P.S. Merry Christmas, you filthy animals !!! X
